FINED FOR BETTING.
PENALTY op FIFTY POINDS IMPOSED. Palmerston X.. June 20. Before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., today, the charges „f betting against John -M.iughan were proceeded with. The rose was commenced on Saturday and the evidence th„, given of two.constables, who stated that on .Tune 21st and -2nd, the days on which the llawke's Pay winiter meeting was held, they went to the Claiendon Motel and in the commercial room mot accused, with whom they each made bets and from whom they receive winnings. To-day Detective Quirke deposed that the constables in question, who weie strangers to Palmerston. were acting under his instructions. When Maughan was arrested entries corresponding to the instructions given to the constables were found in a book in his possession There were also in the .book a large number of entries recording bets on horses running at the Hawke's Bay meeting. Witness Had known defendant, as a bookmaker and had never seen him do any work! He was a licensed bookmaker before the new Act came into force. Witness had watched the accused on race meeting days When arrested the defendant said tho book recording bets was not his His Worship said it was the first offence m this district, but from the book he considered that defendant was carrying on bookmaking to a considerable extent. The defendant wotiid he convicted and fined £25 and costs on each of the I;wo charges. — ■
