THE FOXTON COLLISION
MARINE ENQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. An enquiry commenced to-day into tlie collision between the steamers Wairau and Himitangi in the Manawatu river on May l(i. Mr. McArthui presided, with Captains Post and Black as assessors. According to the evidence of Captain Mauley, of the Himitangi, the accident was caused by the Wairau breaking both the understanding ami the rule by crossing over to the wrong side. Oliver Mclntyre, mate of the Wairau, said his vessel was on her starboard side of the river, and if the Himitangi had kept her starboard side the vessels ' must have passed in safety. He knew ! of no understanding by which inward- ! bound boats had to wait at a bend for boits going the other way. J The enquiry is proceeding. Wellingron, Last Night. ' The court of enquiry concluded, to- ! night investigating the circumstances of the recent collision of the steamers J Wairau and Himitangi in the Manawatu ; river, Foxton. Their decision will be . given to-morrow.
