GAINSBOROUGH PICTURES.

• __ DISPUTED AUTHENTICITY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, .Time 25. Mr. Picrpont Morgan now holds the Gainsborough picture of the Duchess of Devonshire, which was once stolen from Agnew's in London, 'and later found in Chicago. The authenticity of the picture is challenged by another Duchess of Devonshire in Spink's Gallery, London. The lattcr's credibility depends upon a written statement by John Foster, a former general merchant of Sydney, dated July 16, IS7S, the then owner of the picture. If the Foster picture is genuine, then Morgan's is a replica by Gainsborough, finished by Sir Thomas Lawrence. The supposed birth and parentage of Mr. Foster's iaftcr are said to account for the Duchess entrusting the picture to him.
