Mr. E. Snowball was a passenger foe Auckland last night per g.s. Rarawa. Sir James Carroll, Acting-Premier, left Wellington last evening for Christchurch.—Press Association. When the last mail left London Sir William Russell, of Hawko's Bay, had just recovered from n severe attack ot influenza, which confined him to bis room for eight or nine days. Mr. W. P. Nicholls, of Sydney, haa been appointed secretary to the Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Co, Ltd., in West Australia, in succession to Mr. J. Frankis Lane, who died recently. Mr. T. Parata, M.P. for the Southern Maori district, will not be a candidate at the general election owing to failing health. He is now 75 years of age. His son, Charles Parata, of Wellington, will be a candidate for the seat.—Press Association.

Captain M. N. Dower, who has held t!i<' position of town clerk of Xapier .since 1874, and who is now in his seventy-eighth year, has resigned. Mr. M. Murray, assistant town clerk, succeeds liiin. Captain Bower will retain the council treasurership. An award of a bronze medal and 400 dollars, known as "The Amos Prize," in connection with the Harvard University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., has been received by Dr. J. W. Salmond, SolicitorGeneral of New Zealand, in recognition of his treatise on the law of Tort*. —Wellington wire. Mr. Percy Waddy died last week at Sydney. Ho was the second surviving son of the kte Central Sir Riehar* Waddy, who was well known in Sydney in the early sixties «s colonel of the s()th : (Queen's Own) Regiment. He leaves » widow, two sons (Messrs P. R. Waddy, of Wellington, and S. R. Waddy, manager of the Commercial Rank at Cessnock), and four daughters. The Rev. S. S. Osborne, who is the senior member of the Central School committee, and who has long displayed 1 a keen interest in educational matters, has been nominated for the west ward vacancy on the Taranaki Education' Board, Mr. James Wade, the present chairman, having decided not to seek r«election.
