FOOTBALL

li>TER-OOLLEGE MATCHES. ax exciting struggle. By Telegraph.—Press Asosciation. Palmerston Xorth, Last Night. The annual football matches between Te Ante and Wanganui colleges was played on the Winter Show grounds to-day before a dense and wildly excited throng, Wangamu winning uoth senior and junior fixtures, the former by 8 to 6, and the latter by 11 to 0. The senior match was intensely exciting, the game being won and lost three times in the last ten minutes, Wanganui's winning try being scored just before time was sounded. Te Aute scored a try early in the first spell from a clever passing rush, and had much the best of the whole spell, but could not get over the line. About seven minutes from time, Humphrey passed to Hives, and the Wanganul "flier" outpaced the opposition. The try was converted amidst intense enthusiasm. The game had been wonderfully fast, in spite of tho muddy ground as the result of the heavy morning rain. Te Aute attacked immediately on kicking out, and very speedily scored a try, admist a great roar from the huge crowd. It was unconverted. There was only three minutes to go, and it looked all over, and then Hives Hashed out again and gave Humphries a score. The kick at goal missed. The scene was indescribable. Hive? was carried off shoulder high by Wnnganui admirers. Both teams were cheered again and again. This win brings Wanganui level with 'ie Aute—seven wins each in the seniors, in the juniors YV-angaiiUi is five to Te Aute's six.

LEAGUE v. UNION. MR. PARATA'S STATEMENTS CHALLENGED. Auckland, June 20. Mr. \\. T. Parata, who is to manage the proposed .Maori footjmll team to tour New Zealand, made some statements at a recent meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and these have been taken exception to by members of the New Zealand Rugby League, who desire Mr. Parata to prove his statements. In applying for permission totour New Zealand with his team, Mr. Parata said that every member had been approached with tempting offew from the League, but the boys had remained loyal amateurs. Speaking to a Star reporter, Mr. D. W. McLean, treasurer of the New Zealand League and last year's president, said he wanted to challenge Mr. Parata on that statement. He challenged Mr. Parata to produce the names of those players approached, and the names ot the officials of the League said to luive approached them. A rule of the League was that no player shoijld receive any money for playing football, except while on tour, and then only to receive up to 10s per dav. In other respects, apart from this, the constitution of the League was thoroughly amateur. Concluding, Mr. McLean said: "Mr, Parata wants to take a tour over the colony; let him do it in a legitimate manner, and not by using th® Northern Union as a lever. We don't mind fair rivalry, but we object to misstatements."

The Star first juniors to play Inglewood on the Racecourse at 3 p.m. today will be:—Maine, Crockett (2), Bell, L. Whitaker, W. Bridger, C. Bellringer, Rodbuck, Page, Lowe, Penwarden, E. Bellringer, T. Hopkins, and Leary.
