HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the High School Bpard was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present: — Messrs. N. K. McDiarmid (chairman), M. Fraser, E. Dockrill, S. Percy Smith and Dr. Fookes. A letter was received from the Treasury, intimating that the capitation for the first term of the current year amounted to £240 7s '2d.

The Borough Council wrote, in connection with the'Coronationicelebrations that as it was desirable to have the procession as representative as possible me committee in charge of the arrangements would he pleased to know if the members of the Board would take part. After sonic discussion as to the movements of the various members of the Board on Coronation Day, it was resolved to thank the Borough Council for the invitation, and also to inform them that the Board regrets it will be unable to take part in the procession as a local body.

The chairman announced that he had received an invitation from the Chancellor of the University inviting him to attend the ceremony of conferring degrees to be held at Wellington on June 27.

The secretary of the Secondary Schools Assistants' Association of New Zealand, Registered, forwarded a copy of a resolution asking that the Board inform the secretary of the association of any vacancies that may occur on the staff, so .that the information may 'be passed on to the members of the association. By this means it was considered teachers would have better opportunities of applying for vacant positions.— Members were quite in accord, and the association will be notified of the next vacancy.

Mr. Stanley Smith wrote, offering to allow the teachers and pupils of the school the use of the Fitzroy asphalt tennis courts, which he had leased, for the sum of £5 per annum.—lt was resolved to thank Mr. Smith for the offer, which the Board is unable to accept. It was resolved 'to erect a sln>rl for the accommodation of the girls' bicycles at the school, and the matter was left to the chairman and Mr. Smith, with power ,to act.

The Secretary for Education wrote, under date of May 20, that the Department was now proceeding with the printing of the secondary schools parliamentary papers. He noticed that aio report of the year's work of the school had been forwarded, and as none appeared in last year's papers ho would presume, unless informed to the contrary by telegram, that no report would be forwarded.

The secretary pointed out that it had never been the cus-tom to forward a report.

Mr. S. Percy Smith considered that this was rather a pity. A report of the school .should be published. It would not involve much labor.

It was shown that it was too late to deal with the matter this year, and it was resolved that Mr. Pridham be instructed to prepare a report for next year.

Mr. 8. Jjcrcv Smitn and nr. Fookes, who were appointed a committee to obtain information regarding examination, and passes ait other similar schooli, r*> ported that they found the official revery deficient. The information contained therein was very meagre; in fact, in many cases there was none. It would 'be necessary to apply to the principals of some half-dozen schools for the information. Tim committee were granted extension of time in which to furnish the report, and were granted the necessary authority to apply to the principals of the various .schools for information.

The Commissioner of Crown Ljnds wrote, intimating that the Crown Lands ranger would not be available to make the periodical inspections of the Hi»h School reserves under the control of tne Board.—lt was resolved to write and inform .the Land Board that the Board were prepared to pay the cost of such inspection, and ask that the matter be reconsidered.
