DISTRICT NEWS.

.(From Our Own Correspondents.) LEPPBRTOX. On Thursday lu.-.t a concert was held in aid of a very deserving object, viz., the local cemetery. Our-neighborhood is such a healthy'one that, for lack o. money from ordinary sources, the Cemetery Board were forced to appeal to the public for funds to carry out necessaryrepairs to fences, etc., 'and this appeal took the form of a-largely attended con-' cert. Mr. F. W. Atkinson presided, and songs were sung by Mrs. Openshaw, Miss Dodd, and Messrs lleppel, Giddy, Smith, Thornley and Farmer. Mr. B. Luke gave a recitation. All the items were vociferously received by the audience, and many of the performers recalled. As usual, at Lepperton functions, the ladies were to the fore with a bountiful supper. I understand that the concert produced £7 clear. On Saturday evening, at a meeting in the hall, presided over by Mr. C. Munro, it was decided to hold the annual ball on Tlmrsday, July 13, the night after full ni'inn . A committee of twelve gentlemen assisted by a sub-committee of six ladi s (the latter witu power to add to thei: number) should make the ''ball roll." The I•■■miliar rattle of milk carts on their v ■ ,• to the factory is almost silenced ■! 'v. The factory runs on alternate Vvs only, and a number of suppliers t l "v ''laid by" for the winter. The i! Strict is being scourced by three energetic gentlemen armed with a 'subscription list, in aid of an enlarged Shelter shed at the school. The present building is far too small for the requirements of the school, and on the committee being informed that the Education Board would grant a £ for £ subsidy for additions, it was decided to canvass the district for support. So far, 1 hear that the appeal has met with a most generous response. VVaitara West people arc not a little elated over their success at the Winter Show. Nevertheless, they are not suffering from "swelled head"; they are quite awaro that next year they will not be allowed to carry off the first prize without keen competition. Might I suggest that they take a hint from the Bell Block display, and add a little of the local "aqua pura" and some of the work of our resident poets to their next year's collection?

EGMONT VILLAGE. On Wednesday last the Cricket Club held a euchre part and dance in aid of its fund's., ■ Owing to the stormy nature of the weather only a few turned out. However, a most enjoyable evening was spent. Euchre was played till 10 p.m., the prize winners being Mrs. Magee (I), Miss C. Chard (2) and Mr. A. Chard (1), Mr. G. F. Dewhirst (2). A dance concluded the evening, during which an excellent supper was handed round. Mr. R. G. Marsh supplied excellent music, being assisted by Miss Rudd, who played several extras. Mr. N. S. James acted as M.C.

Egmont Villagers presented a formidable array in the Theatre Royal on Thursday night at the boxing tournament. At least 30 residents were present to see tho local man, Zimmerraann, win the novice light-weight. The programme provided was greatly appreciated, and not one returned "hut who was thoroughly satisfied with the evening's entertainment.

A plain and fancy dress ball is being organised by a strong committee of ladies to take place on July 14. There will be two hours' dancing for children to commence with, following by dancing for adults. It is some time since anything of tho kind has been held in the village, and all the children are looking forward with joyful anticipation to the time of their lives. Should the affair prove a success, I understand it is the intention of the promoters to make it an annual function. OMATA..

The annual meeting of householders took place in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Twelve householders were present, Air. E. C. Meredikh presiding. Mr. E. Bayley read the balancesheet for the year ending March 31st, which .showed a credit balance of £2l (is Od. Tho balance-sheet was adopted. A vote of thanks was accorded to the late committee for the way the business had been conducted for the past year. The following committee was then elected for the present year: Messrs. Boffet, E. George, H. Kendall', Pearson, Matthews, E. C. Meredith, and Ramsbottom. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. At a meeting of the committee held subsequently, Mr. E. C. Meredith was elected chairman, and Mr. Boffet was appointed to sign cheques with the chairman. TONGAPORUTU. A meeting of householders was held in the hall on Monday evening, when the following were elected a committee: Messrs. J. Chapman, sen., R. O'Donnell, T. 15. Waters, S. Thompson, and R. Scott. At a subsequent meeting, Mr. Chapman was rc-elocted chairman. A committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs. R. O'Donnell and R. Scott, was appointed to interview the hall ii-usteos with a view to getting a chimney erected at the hall, where ,the teaching of the scholars is carried out. All schoolchildren are requested to assemble at the hall at 11 o'clock on Thursday morning, when the chairman will distribute medals in commemoration of their Majesties Coronation.
