TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting opens at Hastings to-day. i First-rate acceptances have been received for all eveuts. The Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, run over three miles, has drawn a field of ten, including the Aiicklander Te Arai, Lovell and Mount Cook, who ran prominently at Wanganui, and several other notable performers over big country. Of the seven events on the first day's programme no less than four are for jumpers. The Hawke's Bay Hurdle Race will be run on Thursday. The Napier scribe, "The Barb," states that Appin will not be seen under silk at Hastings. In fact, the Century Hurdles winner has not returned from I Auckland. • ! ,<iH
Weights for the Grand Nationals will be declared on Friuay. It is stated that C. Cress will pilot the Karamea hurdlers this season vice A Julian, disqualified.
D'Nil was omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptors for the Hawke's Bay Hurdle Race. The Napper got a bad showing-up at Wanganui, and is evidently a fair horse. Much interest will be taken in his running in the Whakatu Hurdles al> Hastings to-day.
Smilax returned home from Auckland on Saturday and is looking in the best of fettle.
. Cheddar, Fort William, Gold Finder and Merrivonia are most fancied for the New Zealand Cup.
To Arai will have the services of W. Young in the Hawke's Bay Steeple. Lovell will be piloted by H. Telford as usual.
Mallet and Highden are engaged in the hack hurdle Taces at Hastings. Both horses- are reported to be troing well. Mr. ,T. O'Neill will train and race Silver Bullet in 'Stralia. It i.? reported that Soultiforiu has been sold at a good price. Waiputcre was. withdrawn from his Hawke's Bay engagements, and will probably be reserved for Trcntham br Riccarton. The stable has a worthy representative in Te Whctu, who will have the services of W. Young. The Porirua stable usually holds a strong hand in long-distance races, but Kopek is the only entry in this year's New Zealand Cup. Marton was out of sorts recently, but is said to be quite well now, and will be given a run in the Turamoe Hurdles at Hastings. The distance should just about suit the horse, and his form at Feilding and at Wanganui showed him to he a cut above the average fencer. The New Zealand-bred mare, Chanleuse, won the Coronation Cup at Singapore the other day, beating amongst others, Silver Hampton, an Epsom Handicap winner. Hilarian has had a run of bad luck this season, hut on recent track form should run well in future engagements. Gold Circle has fined down a lot as the result of recent racing, and will carry a lot of money in the Scurries at Hastings. A Hastings wire states that Golden Clasp has been scratched for the Whakatu Hurdles, and Ariom for the Ladies' Bracelet.
