A DUEL TO THE DEATH. \ A IjOAX AND ITS TRAGIC UPSHOT. Berlin, June 0. The story of a sensational duel, in; which the principals wero two army officers, Captain von (iarron and Bacon Oswald von Riehthofer, has just leaked' * out.
The baron, it seems was in temporary dillieulties and sought a loan from Von> (iarron, The latter advanced him £2000,, for which he accepted his friend's promts- • sory note, remarking that this waa merely a "matter of form." The story got abroad, and Von Garroai found himself boycotted by his comrades. A few days ago, while dining in a restaurant, he met the baron, and struck him violently in the tace. Such an indignity as that, of course,, could have only one result, and the duel that was promptly arranged come off on. Saturday. The conditions of the combat were that the adversaries were to fight with revolvers at 15 paces, and that it waa to be a duel to the death. Colonel Watterson, an American army officer, who has just returned' from, a European tour, declares that tlifi United States should sell the Philippine Islands and buy Magdalena Bay, Mexico, as a. coaling station. The acquisition of Magdalena Bay, the colonel points out, must eventually be entered upon, and now is the time for tho necessary steps to be taken. It is thought that the purchase of this admirable site for a coaling Btation could easily be arranged at the present time, as the revolutionary party in Mexico is friendly to the United States. [lt was Magdalena Bay that the Japanese some time ago were reported to be endeavoring to secure for a coaling station.]
AUSTRALIA'S POLICY. GERMAN PAPER INTERVIEWS MR. FISHER. London, June 9. The London correspondent of a Germanpaper, the Frankfurter Zeitung, has interviewed Mr. Fisher regarding Australia's policy with international affaire. The paper states that the opinion held by the Commonwealth Prime Minister regarding the future of the British people is very different from the aggressive ideaa of English Imperialists. / According-to the Zeitung, the ideal of Mr. Fisher, and of the Australian democracy, seems to be a federation of free peoples, whicii, the journal remarks, would be a strong step towards a federation of the cultured world.
