During the reciprocity debate Senator Nelson accused President Taft of having usurped the treaty-making powers of Congress, and also of having infringed the spirit of the constitution. Reciprocity, in order to pass, ought to receive a two-thirds majority in the Senate, instead of an ordinary majority vote.

ANTI-TRUST LAW. RECIPROCITY BILL'S STAGES. Received 18, 5.5 p.m. > Washington, June 17. A resolution will be introduced into the House of Representatives, with the object of investigating whether an American woollen company infringes the anti-trust law.

Mt. Longworth opposed the wool tariff schedule, other representatives endorsing him. The Democrats, decided to expedite tariff legislation, preference and all other measures. The Senate-leaders announce that there-nre sixty votes favoring the passage of the Reciprocity Bill, but there are larger.numbcrs against it. Mr. Root's amendments have been added t<J the Bill. Friends, who are unwilling to make lengthy speeches, are anxious to vote as early as possible. Mr. Smith twitted the advocates of reciprocity with being ashamed to stand up in the Chamber to champion such a measure. Mr. Townscnd proposed to introduce an amendment Instructing President Taft to undertake further Canadian negotiations, with a view to securing a wider reciprocity. The Bill passed its second reading. The debate will be resumed on Monday. SATURDAY NIGHT SITTING. Received 19, 1.5 a.m. Washington, June 18. The vote on the Wool Tariff Bill will stilt probably be taken on Tuesday or Wednesday. The House of Representatives held a Saturday night session, with a view to concluding the debate.
