Hundreds of pilgrims had ascended the mount, and were going through some of tlic ceremonies incidental to the festival, when with terrible su Mcnness the volcano burst into a state of eruption. The outbreak was accompanied by a tremendous report, which was heard as far as Tokio, which is 00 miles away. Following this terrific explosion came an overwhelming shower of molten lava and ashes. Rescue parties had the greatest difficulty in making their way to the summit, and on arrival there they found that many lives had been lost.'
