(Conducted by "Eileen"). SOCIETY NEWS. NEW PLYMOUTH. An At Home.—ln the Brougham street hall last Thursday afternoon, the Kev. Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Osborne entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea, and every denomination was well represented on account of the popularity of the host and hostess. The hail was arranged aa a drawing-room, with cosy cushioned chairs, and tiny tables, massed with violets, roses and water lillies. During the afternoon' songs were sung by Misses Robson, Taylor and Rea and Mr. Woodard. Mrs. Wood and Miss Warren played a pianoforte duet, and Mrs. Grant gave a recitation. Those who assisted in the hall decorations were Mesdames Paul and Clem Webster, Misses Blyth, Emery, Beck, Rea and G. Laing. The guests were received at the entrance door by the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Osborne, and the latter looked charming in a robe ot black brocade, with cream vest, appliqaed with black, heliotrope floral bonnet, and she carried a bouquet ol violets. On account of the dense crowd my description of the costumes will be somewhat scant. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Whetter, brown coat and skirt, vieux rose hat; Mrs. R. Last Monday evening Mrs. Paul gave a most enjoyable bridge party at her i charming residence, and the prizes were won by Mrs. H. Baily, Mrs. Fraser, and Mr. IT. Baily. The hostess received her i guests in a black silk robe, with lace tunic; Mrs. Home, lettuce green taffeta, trimmed with a darker shade of velvet; Mrs. Bradbury, black silk; Mrs. H. PERSONAL. Miss Humphries, »f Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. Drydcn. Miss Blundell has gone on a visit to Nelson, whore she will attend the wedding of Miss Mules, daughter of Bishop Mules. Miss Roy leaves on Monday for Wellington, and then on to Christchurch. Miss D. Saunders, of Invcrcargill, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Mackay, at Fitzroy. Miss 6. Roy, who has been visiting Wellington for some weeks past, has returned home. I LETTER FROM STRATFORD The Oddfellows held their long-night social in th« Foresters* Hall on Monday evening. There were about 70 or 80 couples present. The floor was in excellent order and the music left nothing to be desired. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of an energetic | ladies' committee and was thoroughly appreciated by all. A quiet but pretty wedding was solemnised at the residence of the bride's parents, •'Durham Villa," lnglewood, on Thursday last, when Mi-s Marv Alia (Dolly) Langhy. eld(4 daughter of Mrs. E. B. Uuiigley. was married to Mr. Thos. E. Taylor, the well-known athlete, and youngest Mm of Mr-;. (!. W. Taylor, ot Miro. The Rev. W. S. Bowie. Wesleyan minister, of lnglewood, performed the ceremony. The bridge was given away by Mr. T. T. Freeman, of Marton, the duties of best man being carried out by Mr. F. Langley, of Gisborne, while Master D. Langley acted as groomsman. Miss Elsie Langley (sister of the bride) was the bridesmaid. After the ceremony the guests sat down to afternoon tea, when the usual toasts wero duly honored. The presents, which were numerous and useful, included a number of cheques. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a beautiful set of furs and to the bridesmaid a lovely gold .brooch. The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a pretty gold watch guard. The happy couple left by the evening train for Xew Plymouth, on route to the Auckland and Rotorua district*, where the honeymoon is to be spent. The bride's travelling dress was a lovely navy blue costume, with hat to match.
