Mr. C. V. Houghton, of Auckland, was a passenger for tiie nor-.i last night per s.s. Itnnawn. A Brisbane Press Association messago states that Mr. E. Lilley, the eminent K.C., is dead. The Eev. John Laird, who came from Dublin to the pastorate of the local Baptist Church some three years ago, has tendered his resignation, the term of his office having now expired. Mr. Laird has made many friends here, and it is hoped he will accede to the very hearty wish of the church, and continue the pastorate. There died at Oamaru on Monday (says the Mail) Miss Louisa Castle Cleary, at the age of seventy-seven years. Miss Cleary, who nrrived in New Zealand in the "sixties," taught in the Oamaru Grammar School, and left thera while Mr. R. Peattie was in charge. Thereafter she taught at Waitnra, Feilding, and the Chatham Islands.
