THE UNIVERSITY TEAM. liy Telegraph.—L'ress Association. DunMlin, Last Night. R. D. Tait, half-back of the Otago University team, has been sele«ted to proceed to Sydney with the University football team. NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. ENCOURAGING SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Wellington, Last Night. A meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held to-night. Grants for the fostering of school football were made to tie following unions:—Bush Districts £6, Manawatu £G, Marlborough £B, Nelson £6, South Auckland £9, South Canterbury £lO, Southland £lO, Wanganui £lO, Wairarapa £lO, Hawke's Bay £B, Buller £O, West Coast £6, Bay of Plenty £5. An appeal was received from a <aul> ia the South Canterbury Rugby Unio*
against the decision ef the local union, by which the club was ordered to forfeit a match. It appears that there was no ball with which to play the match, and the union adjudged the local team to have lost the match, the other team beinor visitors from twelve miles away. The appellants asked that t'he game be played again. The appeal was dismissed. Poverty Bay Union wrote that they desired to challenge Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield. The secretary was instructed to write to the Poverty Bay Union to arrange date of match with the Auckland Union. South Auckland Union wrote stating that they had arranged for a challenge match with Auckland for about the end of August.—A similar reply was authorised that they must fix a definite date. Mr. W. T. Parata gave further particulars re the proposed tour of a Maori team. He stated that the team was not from the Bay of Plenty district. The object was not a money-making one, but if there was a profit from the tour, the loss incurred by the committee on last year's Australian tour would be repaid, and if there waß still a balance, it would be given to charity. | A proper statement of accounts would be supplied to the New Zealand Union. Mr. Parata added that his team and every member of it, had been approached | with tempting offers from the Northern Union League, but the boya had remained loyal amateurs. He urged that the tour would assist in retaining Maoris for the amateur game.—lt was decided to allow the tour to go on, _ provided each player obtained permission from Uis union to join the teany that a statement of accounts be supplied to the New Zealand Union, and that any profit should V' devoted to such charities as the New Zealand Union should approve. The union was not prepared to allow losses of the last tour to be recouped 1 out of profits of this one. The appeal for remission of the re- | maining year of two years' disqualification imposed upon a Melrose player, .T. Marshall, was forwarded through the ' Wellington Rugby Union with a favor- ! able recommendation. —The Union Ae- ' cided that Marshall's disqualification | should terminate on June 30th.
"Is a secretary of a Northern Union League a professional playeTt" was a query forwarded by the South Auckland Union.—Of course a secretary is not necessarily a player, but the union decided that any person actively promoting a Lengup game was guilty of an act of professionalism. The query was therefore answered in the affirmative, and the secretary was instructed to ask for the secretary's name and all particulars relating to his case.
