DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKAHU. (From Our Own Correspondent). Makahu, as usual, was favored with a fine evening for their annual school concert, and parents and pleasure-seekers from far and near journeyed to the schoolroom, where the concert was held. A pianoforte solo played by Mrs. T. R. Mounsey set the ball rolling, after which came the children, and in between their dressing for the various items the adult performers filled in the breach. The children's programme was a very varied one, consisting of Chinese and Japanese fan and umbi'ella songs, and the hit of the evening was the "Rose, Shamrock and Thistle," the Shamrock and Thistle coming on with the dances of their native country. Drill and recitations completed the children's programme. The children carried out their part exceptionally well, reflecting great credit on their teacher, Mrs. Cameron, who must have taken great pains in drilling and dressing the children. About half-way through the concert, the chair1111m (Mr. R. Mounsey) gave out the prizes, when every child attending school received a prize. He spoke in terms of praise of the good work done and expressed regret at the teacher leaving for Oakura, where she commences her new duties on July 1. The adult part of the programme consisted of songs rendered by Mrs Martin, Miss Ford, Master Terry Foley, Messrs. Xoble, Houchin, Wall and R. Mounsey, most of whom received encores, after which Mr. Coyne spoke feelingly, on behalf of parents and settlers, of their appreciation of Mrs. Cameron's kindness and ability in bringing the children on at school, and her willingness in assisting at all outside functions. They all very much regretted her departure, but as she was bettering herself they wished her a long and prosperous life. Three hearty cheers were given for Mrs. Cameron and nearly lifted the roof. Mrs. Cameron suitably responded. The various accompanists were J':s. R. and T. R. Mounsey, Mrs. Cameron, and Mrs. Brewer. Mr. Ford, our energetic committeeman, had everything in apple-pie order as regards seating accommodation, for which great praise is due. After the concert supper was handed round, some of the children remarking "they were nicer cakes than mother makes." The floor was then cleared and dancing was indulged in until 3 a.m., Mr. Noble acting as M.C. The piano was kindly lent by Mrs. Cameron.
