THE NEW PHARMACY.
K MR. \V. ERASER'S PREMISES. I One of the most recent additions to I business premises, certainly the most modern in its method of construction, and right up to the moment in the whale of its appointments and appurtenances is the tine new shop recently erected in Devon street by Mr. W. Eraser for his large and expanding business as/a pharmaceutical and dispensing chemist, vendor of patent medicines and photographic and optical goods. The premises are built in ferroconcrete, and have a fine elevation to Devon street. The verandah, along the whole frontage of the premises, has been erected in one span only. There are two large plate-glass windows, one on either side of the deep recess for the shop entrance, and the glass is fixed with brass corners which obstruct but very little the view of the wares displayed. One of the windows is wholly devoted to a display of photographic goods, and the larger is filled with general chemists' I sundries; the arrangement of both windows being very attractive. ...-««> , Stepping over the threshold, one is immediately struck with the very handsome decorations and arrangements. The pink tinted panelled ceiling of asbestos, and the shaded architraves are the culminating point of a capitally designSd, and furnished interior. The fittings are all in dark-stained woods, and there is a profusion of plate-glass, the curved glass fronts to-the counter cases and along the lower" shelves having a specially good appearance. Practically half of the shelving and eases on one side of) the shop is devoted to photographic goods, Mr. Fraser having steadily established a very large connection in this business, successfully stocking every conceivable requisite for both amateur and professional, holding the agency for the "Kodak" and for Messrs. W. Butcher and Sons, London, Mr. Eraser has had prepared a rapid plate, known as the "Dominion" plate, specially manu-1 facturcd to -meet the requirements of | the New Zealand climate. The remain- < der of this side is devoted to the soap department, and the complete manner in which the soap requirements «f the people of the district are catered for is already notable. All the leading manufacturers of the world contribute to the very fine stocks held, and these arc well shown. The whole of the glass cases across the end of the shop are ' filled with an endless variety of the finest perfumery, and large stocks aTe held in reserve. Then there are the usual shelves, filled ,with bottles bearing their torturing abbreviated Latin names of the-drug contents, and the remainder of the shelving behind the counter is filled with patent medicines and.other preparations. A passage at the right rear of ibc shop leads to a conveniently furnished consulting room j ■ and to a roomy dispensing department, the. centre table bearing water filters ! and the various counters lighted by small gas-jets for convenience in serving : —affixing sealing wax and so on. At the rear is a stock-room, a manufacturing department in connection with ; Mr. Eraser's own specialities, and still I farther back a well-fitted dai-k-room • ' with every convenience for amateur J photographers. There is flarge cellarage accommodation, for stocking reserves of | drugs, bottle', paper, etc., and under • the stairway are the Teserves of photo- < •■raphic mounts, of which there is a very ' big assortment. The premises are lighted throughout with electric light, and a visitor on Saturday night re- < marked that no more convenient and attractive premises had come under his notice during a tour of the Dominion. 1 Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths were the architects, and they supervised the work i of construction. i
