BOXING

AN ATTRACTIVE TOURNAMENT. I ___ | What promises to he the best tonrna-1 ment known in Taranaki will be held 1 by the New Plymouth Boxing Association (registered) in the Theatre Royal on Thursday evening. The association's' committee has arranged an unusually. attractive tournament. In fa*t, two or three of the special matches arranged should in themselves provide an cnterlaiiiment well worth coming a long way to see. In the heavy-weight division G. Hawkins, champion of Taranaki, will I meet J. Cole, the Manawatu "crack" heavy-weight, an experienced boxer of much ability. Middle-weights W. Whitakcr and W. Langdon will fight off for the middle-weight championship of Taranaki, the referee having been unable to separate them at the end of six rounds in the recent championships I tournament at Stratford. Then A. C. Maxwell, the clever New Plymouth light-weight, will meet G. Olsen, of Auckland, in what should be one of the hest contests of the evening. In the bantam-weight division W. Oliver, who ] holds the bantam-weight championship of Taranaki, he having been unopposed at the championships tourney, will meet D. C. Newell, of New Plymouth. All the special mutches are to he of six three-minute rounds, and they should provide plenty of fast, clever boxing. There are also two novice competitions, for which excellent entries have been received. There will be competitors from Rahotu, Pungarehu, Okato, Egmont Village, Puniwhakau, Eltham, and other places. The "draw" for the novice competition will be made this afternoon.

The prices of admission have been fixed as follows:—Dress, circle and stalls os, family circle 3s, pit 2s. These prices arc lower than many other boxing associations charge, for boxing tournaments are expensive affairs to conduct. As a keen demand for seats is anticipated, it has been decided that sixpence extra shall be charged for reserving seats. Admission to the stage will be limited to officials, competitors, and holders of complimentary tickets, the holders of these tickets 'including those gentlemen who have made donations to the medal fund. The box plan is now open at Mr. L. K. Hoffmann's piano shop, Devon street. Members of the association are reminded that last year's ticket will not admit them to the Theatre. Only the new tickets issued since the tournament at Stratford will be passed.

The New Plymouth Boxing Association acknowledges with thanks the receipt of a guinea each from Mr. C. 11. Weston and from "Forester Jack," these donations being towards the association's medal fund for the tournament on Thursday evening next.
