Bishop Nevill, the Primate of New Zealand, and many New Zealanders and Australians attended the Royal levee. Mr. C. E. Bellringer returned on Saturday evening from Wellington, where lie had been attending tne Methodist Conference.

The Right Rev. D. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, was motored through to Hawera yesterday, to connect with the train for Wangunui. Messrs. 6. W. Browne and A. L. Thomson are mentioned as candidates for the vacancy on the Taranuki County Council caused by the resignation of Mr. C. Carter.

Mr. Scott Smith, S.M., Whangarei, is. retiring from the service oi superannuation. He will be succeeded by Mr. A. Crooke, of Grevmouth, Mr. F. V. Frazer, the newty-appointed magistrate from Christehureh, will go to Hokitika, replacing Mr. J. J. Hewitt, who is to succeed Mr. Crooke at Grey mouth.— Press wire.

The Rev. A. H. Colville, M.A., has accepted the vicariate of St. Mary's, New Plymouth. Mr. Colville acted for some time as locum tenens for the Rer. F. G. Evans, and is a gifted preacher. He took part in the general mission in South Africa after the war, and also in the mission in New Zealand last year. He has latelv been acting-warden of St. John's College. Among the passengers by the steamer Athenic, arriving at Wellington from London to-day, are six of the noncommissioned officers selected for duty with the New Zealand defence forces:— Corporal of Horse Norris (Royal Horse Guards), Sergeants Beer (2nd Dragoon Guards), Wood (3rd, Dragoon Guards), Nicholls (oth Lancers), Partridge (3rd Battalion Worcester Regiment), and Shortal (4th Battalion Leinster Regiment).

Oxford University on Saturday conferred doctorships of law on Sir Joseph Ward, Mr. Botha, and Sir Edward Morris in the Sheldonian Theatre. Dr. Goudy, Public Orator, in introducing Sir Joseph Ward in a Latin speech, referred to the New Zealand Dreadnought which had induced competition from other dominions, and said that though his proposals at the present conference were too great for immediate execution, they revealed the far-sighted statesman able to discern the germ of a greater united Empire.

[ Mr. R. G. Cottier, who is leaving the Btaff of Mr. Newton King in order to enter into business with Mr. F. W. Court in Whangamomona, was vesterdav farcwclled by tiie New Plymouth and Stratford staffs of Mr. Newton King. On behalf of the staffs Mr. S. W. Shaw presented Mr. Cottier with a handsome gold watch, inscribed with his name aad the occasion. The opportunity was also taken to present to Mr. George Court a silver matehbox. Mr. Shaw referred in happy terms to the good qualities of Mr. Cottier, emphasising his worth and the esteem which he was held in. Mr. Cottier, in reply, expressed his regret at his severance with so many real friends, and spoke of the kindly relationship tliat had always existed.
