In the League match New South Wales defeated Queensland by 32 points to 4. ~l«...uhjJA! NORTHERN UNION GAME. NEW ZEALAND BEAT AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The representative Northern Union match between the New "ealand and Auckland teams was played at Takapuna racecourse yesterday in very bad weather conditions. A heavy rain storm about 2 o'clock prevented the city people from going across the harbor, and the attendance was thus limited to about 300. The game was spoiled by the state of tjlie ground, and back play was out of the question. New Zealand won a game in which both teams led alternately by 16 points to 14. The Dominion team scored first, Buckland (Taranaki) getting a try which Francis (Auckland) converted. Fricker scored an unconverted try for Auckland, and at half-time the scores were, New Zealand 5, Auckland 3. Auckland got into the lead early in the second spell, Bennett touching down, and shortly after this score was further increased by Harrison scoring a try, which Cole converted. Auckland led by 11 points to ii. Mason (Nelson) and Siddells (Wellington) then scored tries for New Zealand, and Francis (Auckland) converting, the tourists led bv 13 to 11. This lead was almost immediately wiped out by Bennett scoring for the local team, who led by a point with only a few minutes to go. Gillett (Auckland), however, scored a sensational try just on time, and the match ended, New Zealand 10, Auckland 14. Mr. R. Olii phant was referee. The New Zealand team will leave for Sydney to-morrow.
STAR (25) v. OKATO (0). The match between Star and Okato was played on the Western Park under most unfavorable -weather conditions, rain commencing soon after the kick-off and continuing right throughout the match. The ground was in fair condition, being slightly greasy. The game proved very interesting, and the score does not by any means indicate a true comparison between the teams, as during the first half and for some time during the second it was very fast and closely contested. However, towards the end condition told its tale, and Stars quickly amassed 20 points. Tie principal difference lay in the fact that the town team was very quick in turning the attacks of tne visitors into counter-attacks, and were quick to seize opportunities. The game was mainly confined to the forwards, though at times Star got its rearguard going, the hacks handling the greasy hall beautifully. Indeed the majority of the hacks on, both sides took the ball cleanly.
TJtewar won the toss and Okato kicked off. The forwards, headed by Carey and Andrews, at once took play to Star's 25, where Main saved cleverly. The country loam came again, but nice kic.ks by Pfankuch and Hill removed play to Okato's 25. Okato soon 'removed play to Star's territory, and Pike was hotly pressed in defending his line, but proved equal to the occasion and found the line at half-way. Here Dewar, McAllum and Hawkins broke away. The latter passed to Richards in a handy position, but he hung on too long, and a force resulted. From the kick-off Star came again, and Corbett just got to the ball in time to force. A little later a nice passing rush by Star was spoilt by a pass forward. Soon after, from a forward rush, Woods got over and Hawkins converted with a nice kick. Okato were again forced shortly afterwards. The country team livened up a bit and attacked. Rna kicked hard from the ruck and Pike failed to take the ball. Rua and Carev who followed up fast over-ran the ball, which was kicked over the line, and a hot race resulted in Hill kicking In the dead-ball line. The spell ended Without any additional score, though Okato were forced on two or three occasions. The teams changed round at once, and even play followed until Dewar cleverly intercepted a pass from Martin to Malone, and putting in a good run. passed to Hill, who sent the ball wildly to Main. The latter, however, took it at his feet, beat Corbett. and scored in the mud. Hawkins failed to goal. Later on, Malone. from a free kick, bad a shot at goal, but the ball fell short. The next score 'resulted when Pfankuch kicked across to Hill, the latter racing over the line. The kick at goal failed. Stars were now having all the best of the play. Woods and Evans followed up fast, and the latter passed to Dewar, who got across. Hawkins Handed. jh nice goal. Okato's backs then indulged in a passing rush, but did not gain much around. Simmers then made an opening from which McAllum scored. Hawkins' kick failed. Darkness was now fast coming on. but. nevertheless. Stars scored two more tries in quick succession. Okey petting over from a forward rush, and Hill, with a fine run, going clean through the opposing backs. Neither score was converted. Mr. W. , Roeh was referee.
