The story of a thrilling journey in a balloon comes from lngolstadt, a town and fortress of Upper Bavaria. Tlie hero of tlie adventure was one of the officers belonging to the local garrison, who was up in the balloon, when it suddenly broke away from its moorings. As the balloon soared higher and higher into eloudland the sole occupant's situation became one of extreme peril for he knew little or nothing about fteionautics, and was unable to manipulate the valve. Finally, when a height of 10,5(H) feet had been reached, the officer, in sheer desperation, clambered oil to the top of the ga* bag and wrenched open the valve. With the outburst of gas the Ixilloon made a headlong descent towards Munich, fifty miles away, where it came down heavily on some tree tops. Although considerably scared by his sensational flight, the officer, when rescued, was found to have sustained onJy slight injuries.
