CHARACTER READING FROM THUMBS.
Are' your friends true or false? Arc they generous and open-hearted, or mean money-grubbers? Are they really sympathetic and kind, or cold and hard? Will they keep a promise, or betray a trust Look at their thumbs, for there you have a true index to character, according to an expert on the subject, Mr. William Leslie French, who quotes Sir Isaac Newton: ''ln default of other proof, the thumb would convince me of the existence of God." It is pointed out that children born idiotic come into the world without thumbs, or with thumbs which are very small, weak, and powerless. Hence it is a logical deduction that where the intellect is wanting the thumb is. defective. The better proportioned the thumb is, the more the intellectual faculties 'rule. The way to judge a person's character by his thumb is to ask him to place it close to the hand. If it extends to about a quarter of an inch below the second joint of the first finder it is normal. If it reaches the second joint it is long; when it extends half an inch below this joint it is short.. The normal thumb indicates a well-balanced mind', and the persons possessing such are usually sympathetic and kind, and rarely go to extremes in anything. On the other hand, if the thumb is long, it is a sign of sentimental emotion, although at the same time it may inuicate cleverness and powers of organisation. A short thumb indicates that the owner is actuated by generous impulses, and is likely to act upon the spur of the moment. He is inclincu to be garrulous, and responds to the first appeal made to him. A man with a very short thumb is set down as being unstable, in affection is fickle and romantic, and never able to keep a promise, Generally speaking, a man with a thick-set, clumsy thumb is inclined to ho brutal in his tendencies, while if the tip is club-shaped a furious temper and murderous instincts prevail, According to the Bortillon systom of measurements, it has been demonstrated that all murderers, 110 matter of what class, have this peculiar formation.
Does the tlmml) of your friend curve slightly back wards? Then you can always rely upon him in an emergency. Hp will be curious and adjust himself to any predicament, and lias sufficient tact to save an awkward situation.
lie will be generous, but reliable; forgiving, but not easily imposed upon. If a woman, in addition to these qualities sue will be enthusiastic and inquisitive, to almost the point of impertinence, but in a good-natured kind of way, which make* it hard to get angry with her. She would make a discerning though partieulnr wife, because she will ever—though slie wishes to know all detailsblind her eyes to an indiscretion.
Never trust a secret to a person with a thumb the nail portion of which is very short, as it represents inability to hold the tongue. When the nail portion is equal in length to the portion below the it indicates a person who makes his decisions carefully and with excellent judgment, and also possessing sufficient will-power to carry them out. If, 011 the other hand, the lia'il portion is very long, determination amounts almost to domination and tyranny.
