(From Our Own Correspondent). LICENSING COMMITTEE. The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. Fitzherbert, S.M. (chairman), Birdling, Wells, Pigott, and Pearc*. t fai*g, Applications for licenses were granted to Messrs. Jones (Tokaanu), Kerr (Waitara), Lake (Club), Cusack (Masonic), and Bethune (Urenui). Applications were made and granted for permission to extinguish lights ai 10 o'clock. Sergeant Dart asked that in the cases of the Club and Masonic Hotels better fencing be provided and some gates erected, but the committee decided that they had no power to deal with boundary fences.
MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Before Mr. Fitzherbert, S.M.
Judgment by default was given in the cases of C. N. Kowe v. Walter Tcrrill, claim £4 Is 4d. The sum of £1 had been paid into Court and judgment was given for £3 Is 4d, with costs 15s. S. W. Ashton v. D. 0. Shute, claim £2 13s, costs 18k; Chas. Dunbar v. D. 0. Shute, claim £4 5s 10d, costs 18s. In the judgment summons case, Hatrick and Co. v. D. 0. Shute, claim £4 7s 7d, defendant appeared and tendered a cheque for £2, which was accepted on account. His Worship saia defendant was not in a fit state to give evidence, and instructed Constable Lapoule to issue a summons whon he would send Shute to an inebriates home.
lit the defended ease, It. G. Sampson (Wilson and Grey) v. I. Watkins (Mr. Spcnce), claim £lO 13s (id, balance of money alleged to be due on a contract, after hearing the evidence, His Worship said it wa3 a most difficult case, and he could not say that cither plaintiff or defendant had made any statement which they did not honestly believe to be true, and thought there had been a misunderstanding. As there was no corroborative evidence by plaintiff, he would have to nonsuit him with costs. In the case of L. Hunter, v. Mrs. M. McGuinncss, claim £25, profit alleged to be due on the sale of some cattle, the case promising to be a lengthy one, it was, by consent, adjourned to New Plymouth, and will be heard on Tuesday next. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held day evening. ™ Correspondence was read from W. Bannantyne and Co., Wellington, asking if there was any by-law preventing them erecting a powder magazine on the sandhills; from the secretary Waitara Fire Brigade asking that a fire inspector be appointed, and suggesting the brigade captain as suitable. The overseer's report was read. C. Ayton, carting contractor, asked that .his contract be transferred to F. O'Carroll,. The foreman's report was read. Cr. G. V. Tate wrote stating he had heard that the stone being obtained by J. Coleman was very small, and hoped if such was the case the engineer woula not pass it, as only the best obtainable should be taken. .<*
The Waitara West Road Board applied for the sUDsidy of £8 9s 7d towards the upkeep of the Belt road. The Railway Department forwarded the lease of section on which the fire station is erected for signature. Mr. W. P. Snell wrote asking for repairs to footpath in front of his new shop, and J. Coleman requested that a road be opened and formed from High street to his property. A letter was received from the" Health Department re plague precautions. Thos. Borthwick and Sons and O. Klenner wrote requesting a renewal of slaughtering licenses. The engineer reported that the contractors for metal supply were proceeding with their contracts satisfactorily, and suggested the extension of one contract by 400 yards, and that the plans for the bridge had been forwarded to Wellington for approval. The clerk was instructed to give W. Bannantyne and Co. the information asked for.
The matter of appointment of a fire inspector was held over till next meet* ing, the clerk in the meantime to make enquiries as to authorities.
Tenders are to be called for erecting a cover over settling tank. The transfer of carting contract from Ayton to O'Carroll was agreed to. The Mayor and Cr. Battenbury were authorised to seal and sign the deed of lease for the fire brigade station. It was resolved to repair the footpath in front of Mr. Sncll's shop conditionally on applicant paying half the cost. The matter of giving access to J. Coleman's property was left in the hands of the Works Committee. Messrs. Borthwick and Sons' and A Klenner's applications for renewals of slaughtering licenses were granted. The town clerk was granted an iacrease of £4O in his salary. The enpier was authorised to extend contract Ko. 2 an additional 400 yards, to be laid on Cracroft street. Tlie Mayor was authorised to call a public meeting m connection with Coronation Day celebrations. _ The Reserves Committee was authorised to take action in cases of tenants who were not complying with tie conditions of lease.
