(From Our Own Correspondent). The Eltham Hockey Club met and defeated the local team on Monday by two goals to one after an interesting game. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a social evening in St. John's Hall. A most enjoyable evening was spent in dancing and singing, the visitors expressing their appreciation of the very enjoyable evening's amusement.
At a meeting of the school committee on Monday evening a circular was received 'from the Waionini Fireworks Co. re a display on Coronation night, but as some 120 of the children will be taking part in the fire brigade ball, it was decided to take no action. Arising out of the headmaster's and visiting committee's report, it was resolved to apply to the Education Board for larger grates, new blinds for two rooms, the alteration of the down pipes from washbasins, and a new fence round the school grounds and horse paddock. It was decided that the horse paddock could be used only for the convenience of children compelled to ride to school.
The road over Mount Messenger is feeling the effects of recent rains, in many places being now very heavy. Other roads in the Okau district are in a similar way, up near Kotare being particularly bad in places. To-morrow's football match, Tukapa v. Clifton, is rousing considerable interest locally, and a good game is looked for.
