WELLINGTON DEFEAT MANAWATU, By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The first match this season for the New Zealand Hockey Association's challenge shield took place yesterday at Day's Bay. The weather was disagreeable, there being a slight rain. Wellington won by six goals to two. Elliott scored both goals for Manawatu, whilst Wellington's scorers were Loader (3), G. Strack (2) and C. Straok (1). A match between Wellington and Manawatu Wednesday representatives was drawn, each side scoring four goals. TATARAIMAKA (4) v. NEW PLYMOUTH (2). A match was played on the racecourse ground on Saturday afternoon between the above teams. The country player* have evidently been paying strict attention to practice and show much improvement in their play. A. Petty (forward and J. Morris (back) were perhaps the most conspicuous. The game was well contested all through, and the scores would just about indicate the merits of the respective teams. Tataraimaka scored within a few minutes of the start, and were giving the locals a busy time defending for the greater part of the first spell, which ended with the scores, Tataraimaka 3, New Plymouth 1. The town men infused more dash into their play in the second half, and had their opponents in trouble on several occasions, but the latter were able to clear their circle, Turner, as usual, being very prominent. Each side added a goal during this spell. When the whistle went for time New Plymouth were making strenuous efforts to add to their total. Turner (3) and Hedgeland were responsible for Tataraimaka's score, while Howell secured both New Plymouth's goals. Mr. Hoby made a satisfactory referee.
