HUNTING

The members of the Hunt Club met ' on Thursday at Mr. C. Topliss' farm, Waihi, in good weather, though the f round was somewhat slippery. Mr and frs. Topliss entertained the members at a hot luncheon before the hunt took place. Mr. Topliss and his sons went to a great deal of trouble in sparring 52 fences, and the country hunted over was the finest yet met with by the club. Ther was a very large attendance of both members and followers, coming from New Plymouth, Urenui, Waitara, Tikorangi, Inglewood, and Waihi. The fences were just the right thing, and the jumping was very satisfactory. There were only three runs, but these averaged about five miles each. In one of the runs the hare crossed a river, with the hounds and hunters following. In all the runs the hares were killed, owing to their becoming exhausted by the long chase. Shortly after 4 o'clock the huntsmen adjourned to Mrs. C. Topliss', where the afternoon tea provided was much appreciated. The following are some of the riders and their hunters: Messrs. Halcombe (the master) on Flying Scotchman, B. H. Chaney (deputymaster) on Drudgery, H. Matthew* (deputy-master) on Rua, A. Cliff (huntsman) on Kura and Kiri, W. Boulton on Pompey, E. Lash (acting-whip) on Jack, W. T. Hookham on Otoaroa, Rook on Bachelor's Button, A. H. Standish on Blucy, N. Pcpperill on Nakau, I. Pepperill on Pikau, W. Lonergan on Singlet, h. Jennms on Laddie, Topliss (3), J. Mabin on Blends. R George on Rawhinia, Mockman on Bay, F. Sampson on Blacky, F. Cole on Niger, G. Foreman on Roscv, Mrs. Matthews on Star Rose, Miss Williamson on Darky, and several others. The following were onlookers: Mr. and Miss Wheatlcy, Mrs. and Mhw Milroy, Mrs. Little, Mr. N. Bewley, and' Miss Mackie. There will be no hunt next Thursday on account of the show, but the following Thursday the meet will take place at Mr. G. Sole's, at Bell Block.
