SUXSTAR WINS THE DERBY. KIXG ACCORDED GREAT RECEPTION By Cable—Press Association—Cooyrieht. London, May 31. The English Derby, run at Epsom, resulted: Suustar 1, Stedfast 2, Royaltender 3. The King had a great reception at the Epsom meeting, which was almost like a Derby Day. A feature of the racing was that the jockey Stearns did the "hat" trick, his mounts including Jack Joel's Sunspot—Moris colt. An enormous crowd witnessed the Derby. The Australian delegates, their wives, and many other colonials were present. The King and Queen received an ovation.

There were twenty-six starters. Sunstar was always well placed, and rounding Tottenham Corner he came through on the rails and won with the utmost ease by two lengths in 2min 36 3-ssec. Phryxtis was fourth. It is reported that the Calcutta Club sweepstakes on the race gave a prize of £05,000 for the winner. THE "TOTE" IN CANADA. One of the leading sportsmen of Canada, writing to a contemporary under date April 4, says:— "Thanks very much for copies of your paper containing the debates in 'your Parliament on the Gaming Act Amendment Bill. We were greatly interested in the discussion, and the'information on the subject that you sent over has been most useful to'us here. As you' know, the Miller Bill, which passed our Parliament last year, reduced the number of racing days here, and no race meeting in Canada can now go on for more than eight conseeutive days (they used to race for a month on' end in some parts of the country), while they are strictly limited to a' small number of total days. For example, the Ontario Racing Club—our chief racing organisation—are doing away with bookmakers ■ this year, and are installing the totalisator. We think it will be a great improvement in every way; it will certainly keep the American 'bookie' out of Canada—at all events, so far as the Province of Ontario is concerned. "And I noticed with satisfaction that your Government has set up a Racing Commission. Let us hope that the members thereof will have the courage of their convictions: if so, I am sure it will be an excellent thing. Tf we could have n reallv independent commission here it won" be a fine thing, but the Federal Government will not do anything in that way, T am sorry to say. Sead us along the report of your | Racing Commission, as it is bound to I supply us with a few wrkiklcs."
