RIVAL FOR RADIUM.
IN CURE FOR CANCER. AN AUCKLAND DOCTOR'S SUCCESS. Auckland, May 30. The discovery of a cure for cancer is probably the most desired result of all, scientific investigations. It was cabled from Sydney recently that three cases were on record in which permanent cures had been effected through the agency of radium. Even more satisfactory is the knowledge thai in Auckland a number oi permanent cures have been effected in cases of cancer of the skin-commonly known as rodent ulcers. In the past it has been customary to have recourse to excision for all cases of the kind. Invariably, however, the cancerous growth has extended, and became, more malignant, ultimately causing' death. In Auckland last year one of the best known medical men tried a new form of treatment in which the X rays were used in conjunction wita metal. Other leading Burgeons, impressed with the possibility of the new treatment, sent their patients to their brother practitioner, with the result that a number of permanent cures have now been recorded. SUCCESSFUL TESTS. The first patient so treated suffered from cancer of the skin in the region of the eve. He had the growth removed three times, but after the X ray and metal treatment there were speedy signs of improvement, and four months later there were no traces of the growth left. The man submitted himself for observation three weeks ago, and there was nothing beyond a smooth sdar to show that cancer haa existed. The second case so treated was that of rodent ulcer which had eaten so deeply into the side of the nose that the whole nasal cavity was exposed. This patient was first treated in August, and on February 6th was quite recovered, and the wound was perfectly healed. I In a third case, although a speedy I cure was not established, the result was ! exceedingly satisfactory. It was a case of cancer, or sarcoma of the tonsils. I Silver wires were placed in the throat, and the X rays employed. The whole ! of the sarcoma came away, the tonsils I being sloughed out. The enlarged glands , in the neck went down. HOW THE EFFECT IS SECURED. In using silver foil and the X rays, the effftct is secured in much the same I as that obtained by of radium. i The rays effected from the metal seem | to produce similar effects to the emana- | tions of radium. Professor Thomas, in his experiments I before the last British Medical Association conference in London, showed the secondary radiations set up by the impact of the X rays on different metals. Those excited in the case of silver were apparently similar to the radiations of radium. The treatment in Auckland has only been successfully applied in the case of external eancerous growth.
