CHARGED WITH MURDER. By Telegraph.—Press AsßOciation. Wellington, Thursday. Charles Smith, mate of the American barque Malsowell, while it was lying at Newcastle, was arrested on a charge of having murdered a Japanese steward on hoard that vessel when she was voyaging from Delagoa Bay to Newcastle. Tic was brought to Wellington by the Aorangi yesterday afternoon in charge of a special constable belonging to the United States Consulate at Sydney. Smith, who denied the charge, left today for San Francisco by therlAorangi. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Wellington. Thursday. _ At the Magistrate's Court to-day William Booth was committed for trial on a charge of stealing .113 from the person. A BETTING CASE. Blenheim, Thursday. Samuel Isaacs and Cecil Murray were fined £2O and costs for having betted on a racecourse, with the alternative of three months' imprisonment.
