XORTII ISLAXD DOG TRIALS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dannevirke, Last Night. The firs! annual championship meeting under the auspices of the North Island Dog 1 rials Association was com* menced at Maharahara to-day. Over one hundred entries were received from all over Xew Zealand, with a specially strong contingent from Canterbury. Mr, M. C. Rutherford, of Oulverden, was ,'judge. The Championship Long Head resulted as follows: R. Pollock's (Christehiireh) Sharp, 2!) points, 1; A. A, Frascr's (Christehiireh) Southern Star, 28 points, 2; W. Wyte's (Waipawa) Boy, 27 points, 3; J. McDonald's (Dannevirke), Hon, 2(i points, 4. There were thirtyeight competitors.
HON. T. MACKENZIE'S MOVEMENTS, Christckurch, Last Night. The lion, T. Mackenzie and his private secretary, Mr. L. E. Johnson, arrived from Wellington by the .steamer this morning, and left for the south by the second express. On Friday. Mr. Mackenzie opens the new post office .at Bal« elutha. He will also attend the Duncdtal winter show.
THE TI'HAKIXA'S PASSENGERS. Wellington, List Night. Tin Turakinn, which arrived at Wellington from London this afternoon, brought lii."> third-class passengers, including SO assisted immigrants. There are 13 domestic servants and three farm laborers amongst them, and five wives who have come out to join their hugbands.
A HANDSOME DONATION. Masterton, Last Night. Mr. W. C. Buchanan. M.P., to-day handed a cheque for £IOOO to the WaiTarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board as the first iistalment of a donation of £4200 towards the erection oJ a home for Incurables at Greytown. MR. MASSE Y'S CAMPAIGN. AsHburton, Last Night. The leader of the Opposition addressed a meeting of six htrodrad people in the Theatre Royal to-night, the Mayor presiding. The address was on lines delivered elsewhere, and no new notes were struck. A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation at its clOße. DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. Timaru, Wednesday. At the Supreme, Court, in the libel case Peter Bowkcr v. Timaru Post, judgment was given for plaintiff for £ls and cost 8 on the lowest scale. STEAMER REFLOATED. Palmerston N., May 31. The attempts to refloat the Wairau have been successful. It was got off the shore early yesterday morning, and towed to the wharf, where it is disfi charging. The rent in the hull was a little forward of the engine-room, and extended from the deck to the bridge. is intended to make temporary repairs in Foxtou, and then take the vessel to Wellington to be thoroughly overhauled. DUNEDIN WOMEN'S WARD. Dunedin, Mhy 31. The fund for the women's ward a£ the Dunedin ■ Hospital now stands at £4IOO, exclusive of the receipts from "The Gondoliers" benefit, which, while not yet icurately ascertained, arc likely to swell the total to over £4200. The fund will be closed on Saturday. GOLD FINDS IN WESTLAND. Reefton, May 31. A report on Saturday stating that the Just in-Time mine, at Capleston, had sft'uek good stone in the 450 ft. level has been confirmed. There is a go«d face of stone carrying gold, and the find will resuscitate, in all probability, the old time glories of Capleston. Grant delight is felt in consequence of the New Big River report for showing GOO toins of stone yielded 500 ounces of melted gold, and from cyanide 460z. 12dwt. The bullion is estimated- at a value of £2300. The total yield from' the inception of this mine is £200,394-. WAIIH AND NO-LICENSE. Wailii, Wednesday. During a concert last night, attended by 1000 residents, the Mayor referred to tiie statement made by Mr. Poole, M.P., lit a no-license rally at Invercargill, that at one time it was unsafe for women te walk the streets of Waihi at night. The Mayor emphatically denied the allegation. and moved: "That this meeting enter an emphatic protest against Mr. Poole's unjustifiable remarks." This was carried unanimously amid great applause. A HERO. Wailn, Wednesday. W. Moral), who bravely rsseued a man who was being carried put to sea at Bowentown Heads at Christmas, and who was awaifled the Humane Society's gold medal, was presented by the Mayor, on behalf of the public of Waihi, with e gold medal and clasp. Moran kept his companion above water for two hour' , and- they were eventually hauled to shere in an exhausted condition. A montli ago Moran was rendered totally blind by an explosion in the mine. The concert was given in his aid.
