SCHOONERS SEIZED. FOR PEARL FISHING. By Cable —Press Association- Copyright. Received 1, 12.4.5 a.m. Perth, May 31. The gunboat Gayuiidah towed to Broome two pearly schooners, called the Harriet and Ftrtuna, flying the Dutch flag-, and handed them over to the Customs authorities. They were seized for illegal pearl poaching. A GUNBOAT TO PATROL THE COAST. Received, 1, 1 a.m. Melbourne, May 31. The Minister for Customs explains in regard to the seizure of the schooners that for a considerable time the Customs Department had been closely watching the visits of foreign vessels on the Westralian coast, which, without authority or recognition of the laws, were engaged in pearling and other fishing. They were manned by Eastern crews. Besides the loss to the revenue through their failing to pay duty on dutiable goods, there was the danger of the introduction of contagious diseases by undesirable aliens.

Tt has been decided that the gunboat shall patrol the coast from Thursday Island to Geraldton. The Minister is not yet decided what to do with the capfkired schooners.
