MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

l I erviL cases. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, S.M'., presiding, judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases:— M. G. Williams v. Charles Cairney, claim 16s, costs Os; Bullock and. Johnston (Mr. Hutchen) v. Edward McKay, claim £2 6s Id, costs 10s. CASE OF A MAORI.

■ Te Atua Tauhoi, a Native, appeared to show cause why an order should not be made against him for the payment of £3 ss, amount of a debt due to Dr. Home for which judgment had been obtained in October last. Mr. Nicholson appeared for the judgment creditor. The case had been adjourned for a week to enable the debtor to have an interpreter present, but yesterday he asked, "Who's going to find the interpreter?" After explanations, his interpreter came forward. Counsel elicited from him that he worked for £ 1 17s 6d a week at Messrs. Hawkins and Smith's, and lived at Puketotara, where he owned the two acres of land on which he resided. He was not married, but had four children dependent on him. He received £1 19s half-yearly from the Public Trustee. He admitted having given a dance to his friends at the Brougham street hall recently, and that he paid for the printed invitations, but the expenses were shared by some of his friends. His Worship said that this was one of the cases which came on the border-] line. He was satisfied, although it had not been conclusively proved, that .defendant must have had the money to satisfy the judgment, but he would give him another chance. The case would be adjourned for a month, and unless he considerably reduced the debt in that time he would probably have to make an order.
