The Corinna was not despatched to Onehunga on .Saturday, but remained in port. She loads a quantity of cheese to-dav and sails afterwards for Wellington. THE PAPANUI AGAIN.
The Australian Shipping Company, who recently purchased the steamer Papanui, and, after having her repaired, despatched her with a full cargo of Australian products and a large number of passengers to London, are having trouble in securing return cargo and passengers owing to the operation of a system of deferred rebates granted by the shipping ring in the United Kingdom. Very little cargo has been booked for the return voyage of the Papanui to be made in June, although every other steamer on the berth for Australia is being loaded almost to the hatches. Evidence is not wanting as to the reason. A Melbourne firm arranged with the Papanui's owners for the carriage of 12,000 casks of cement from London, and cabled Home instructions to their agents to forward the consignment by the steamer. A reply was quickly forthcoming that the agents could not comply, as if they shipped by the Papanui they would lose their deferred rebates. The Papanui's owners then arranged to buy the cement in London, carry it to Melbourne, and sell it there to the consignees. A cablegram to the cement manufacturers brought a refusal to sell to the shipping company, and arrangements for shipping by another line have had to be made.
The company are not only experiencing trouble in securing cargo, but are being undercut by the shipping ring in regard to passenger fares. The vessel carries accommodation for which from £3B to £.45 is charged for the voyage Home. A share of the immigrant traffic has been applied for twice to the Immigrant Bureau in Melbourne, but no business has resulted.
The Australian Shipping Company hope to make the Papanui a pioneer steamer of a large locally-owned fleet, and an application is being made to the State and Federal Governments for a share of their cargo consignments from London. The result will be awaited with interest.
