Constable Rowlands, stationed in New Plymouth for the last four years, has resigned from the service. The death is announced of Mr. L. Irvine, a settler who had resided in the Patea district for over 30 years. On the occasion of their leaving Ha» wera for a six months' holiday trip to England, the Rev. and Mrs. Cassell were presented by their parishioners with ft purse of sovereigns. A London cablegram states that the presentations at their Majesties' fourtb court included Lady and Miss Ward, Mesdames Fisher, Findlay, and Hislop, and Misses Edith and Cora Feldwick, of Invercargill. A Napier telegram states that at the request of several representatives of labor unions, Mr. B. J. Dolan, barrister and solicitor, has consented to contest the Napier seat at the general election. The other candidates will be Mr. J. Vigor Brown (the sitting member) and Mr. George Nelson. Sir Robert Stout, Chancellor of the New Zealand University, has appointed Mr. Vernon Redwood, formerly Mayor of Toowoomba, to represent the University at the inauguration of the new Brisbane University on the Ist of June. Mr. Redwood is a nephew of Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington.—Press wire.

Some months ago, Mr. Percy Hay tor, a farming cadet, and an officer in the Feilding Mounted Rifles, made a gallant rescue of Mr. James Fitton from being gored to death by a bullock ou Mr. T. Scoble Cornish's property at Kiwitea. This week's Australian mail brings word that the Royal Humane Society hag awarded Mr. Taylor the bronze medal in recognition of his bravery. Canon Charles Llewellyn Ivens, Vicar of Sowerby Bridge, and formerly of Leeds, was married at St. Jude's Church, Halifax, England, on April I#, to Miss Annie Tate, until recently a student at the University of Leeds. The Canon, who is a widower, is 58 years of age, and his bride 21. He was one of the. party of English missioners who visited New Zealand last year, and was subsequently appointed Vicar of St. Mary's, New Plymouth, but he cabled! declining the appointment.
