BRISBANE GAS STRIKE.

A portion of the city has been thrown into darkness owing to the inexperience of the stokers who are maintaining the gas supply. Received 27, 1 a.m. Brisbane, May 20. The gas strike has reached an acute stage, owing to the failure of the supply. Thousands of hands employed in factories and establishments relying on gas-power were unable to resume work. The Coal Workers' and Lighters' Union agreed not to carry coal for the gasworks. A Trades Union deputation asked (he Premier to intervene. He replied that there was no cause to interfere. The company had done nothing contrary to law. He would, however, do his utmost to bring about a conference and appoint an arbitrator, if both sides were agreeable.
