ENTERTAINMENTS.

"EAST LYNXE." The inclement weather grentlv interfered with the attendance at the "Theatre Royal last night, and there was only a fair audience to greet Allan Hamilton's new dramatic company on the final night of their New Plymouth season, when Mrs. Ilenry Woods' great emotional drama "East Lynne" was presented. The pathetic story is so well known that it is unnecessary to recapitulate it. It is so often burlesqued, however, by incompetent actors that its pathetic passages, instead of exciting sympathy, excite derision. Last night there should have been a crowded house, for its interpretation was such as would have satisfied tlie author of tile book, .Airs Henry Woods, herself. Prom the prologue till the final scene in the fifth act interest was well sustained, and the well-known story was closely followed by the audience, many of whom at times forgot that it was only acting, so vividly realistic was the unfolding of the plot. Miss Frances Ross gave a brilliant impersonation of the parts of Lady Isabel and Madame Vine, whilst Mr. Conway Wingfield's portrayal of the role of Archibald Carlyle was exceedingly meritorious. The characterisation of the other parts was well sustained bv the members of the company, all of whom are artists of more "than ordinarv ability.
