THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.

N.S.W. WISHES TO PARTICIPATE. By Cable—Press Sydney, May 23. Mr. Holman wrote to Mr. Hughes, Act-ing-Federal Premier, declaring that the State Government felt concern over the matter of the maintenance of a regular service from Sydney to Vane-iiver. The new contract between the (V-'idian and New Zealand Governments w !d not oblige the contractors to send steamers west of Auckland. The steamers would prsbably run to Australia, but New Zealand had a preference over the space. Apart from the consideration of the money annually expended in connection with the steamers on wages, coaling and docking, amounting to £IOO,OOO, there was a possibility of jeopardising the trade. He urged that Mr. Fisher be communicated with, in view of his approaching conference with Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

Mr. Hughes replied that the representation had been forwarded to Mr. Fisher. Mr. Holman states that unless something is done the State will consider the question of a contribution sufficient to secure space for New South Wales.
