CORONATION MEMORIAL.

XEvV PLYMOUTH SCHEMES. At the last meeting of the Western ' Park Board it was decided u> aim >u 'ii the New Plymouth Borough Council on the matter of erecting a coronation memorial in Western Park. It js proposed that this should take the form of a band rotunda, near the crest of the hill. The estimated cost is £2OO, and the board respectfully requests the council to apply for the Government subsidy of £ for £ on £IOO which the board undertakes to raise for the above purpose. The East End Bathing Reserve Committee has also made application in a similar direction, its memorial to take the form of a swimming bath in the Hcnui river at the railway bridge. This is estimated to cost £IOO, and the deepening of the water will be secured by the construction of a weir across the river.

Still another scheme is propounded by His Worship the 'Mayor, who, with a view to still further beautifying the town and making the waterfront more attractive, proposes making an avenue of trees along Woolcombe Terrace and the Mount Bryan Plantation Reserve from Hobson street to Govcr street. These schemes will come before the borough council at its next meeting. THE CORONATION SUBSIDY. By a circular recently issued to local bodies, the Minister of Internal Affairs notifies that the Government is prepared to consider applications by city and. borough councils, county councils,; town boards, road boards, and harbor boards, for a subsidy towards the cost of erecting buildings, etc., for public purposes in commemoration of the coronation of His Majesty King George V. The following arc considered suitable objects: Town halls, libraries, swimming baths, fountains, avenues of trees, and band rotundas. The amount of the subsidy will not exceed £250, and will be payable in the basis of £ for £ on the amount expended by the local authority out of its funds or out of moneys raised by public subscriptions tab the purpose, that is to say, if the amount so expended is £SOO the maximum subsidy of £250 will be granted, and a lesser sum in proportion if expenditure is less than £SOO. Every building so subsidised J should have an inscription on a suitable part of the structure indicating that it has been erected to commemorate this coronation, and the Minister suggests that, if possible, some ceremony should be. held on Coronation Day in connection with the memorial. No subsidy will be payable in respect of moneys expended out of loans raised for the purpose of erecting the buildings. It is necessary I to submit applications to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Wellington, and these must indicate the nature of the building proposed to be erected, with! estimated cost.
