A NEW INDUSTRY.
(Published by arrangement.) To the Editor. Sir,—Regarding a new chemical industry for Taranaki connected with the destructive distillation of wood, I was informed yesterday by Mr. Ducker, sawmiller, Warea Road," that 1000 acres of bush, chiefly rata, exists within six miles of Warea, and is estimated to contain 5.000,000 cords of rata. Suffice it to say that in 1000 I experimented in making these, products, namely, acetic acid, methyl, alcohol, potash, and wood tar, at I'VildS'ng. for Messrs! Lethbridge, M.H.R.. Cloodbehere, Can- and Sandilands. on capital altogether too small. Hut the analytical results were well determined. I am willing to manage a movement, as manager and practical chemist, for starting the industry, provided a capital of from £o,0f)0 to £IO.OOO is subscribed. These are the kind of things technical schools should promote in a new country. Taranaki is proverbial for chemical work. Already it has dairy products, petroleum, and ironsand. Let us go at this in a spirited manner and shine.—l am, &c, 11. M. LE YIXCE, 8.A., M.B.
