"WHY .MEN U)VE WOMEN" CO. "'Melodrama of the present day is tragedy served with piquant sauce of, comedy," says a Sydney critic, reviewing ] Walter Howard's play, "Why Men Love Women," which is to be produced by Mr. Allan Hamilton's Company, headed by Mr. Conway 'Wingfield and 'Miss Frances Ross, at the Theatre Royal to-morrow (Wednesday) night. "Why Men Love Women" is said to be a mixture of both; it has a strong and quite possible love interest. It is Intensely tragic in places and highly amusing in others, and has the conventional hut popular ending—virtue triumphant over vice. But it I fulfils another mission; it gives somp instructive lessons on Indian loyalty to the Empire and Russia's, designs in the .East. "'Why Men Lpvc Women" has a thrill in. ft. and Jhe Eastern atmosphere carries with it a'sense, of freshness after a succession of melodrama, in which,, conventional English i>r American types were pressed into service, with scenic settings of a familiar kind. We have in '•WhyMen Love Women'' n bungalow on the Himalayas, the ruined prison at Simla, the Maharajah's .palace and the cave of C'hundra.iSingh, and an air of mysticism is giyen to some of the scenes by making a Hindoo "medicine man" one of the principal characters, The company producing this play throughout New" Zealand is said to be an exceptionally strong one, and after glancing through the personnel one receives adequate corroboration of this statement. • Headed by "Miss Frances Ross, raid Mr. Conway Wingfield. who are supported by many popular players, the company is without a tail, and should meet all requirements. Many tons of scenery, properties, wardrobes, etc.. are accompanying the show, and altogether a first-class production is promised local phi/goers. The box plan for the season is now onview at Collier's: On Thursday, the. last night of the season. Mrs. Henry Wood's famous plav. "East Lynne,"' will be stated, with Miss Boss in her ideal character of "Ladv Tsabel."
