PEACE VERSUS WAR.

To the Editor. ■Sir, —'May J protest against the tone of the articles against international peace which appear at frequent intervals inthe leading columns of the "News." Al- ■ though war may not be a thing of reason, why cannot we discuss the question in a calm and rational war? Mention it to the ordinary man in the street, and ns often as not lie gets deeply stirred and talks of the fell designs of Germany? Now, as controlled Britishers, is it not time we got rid of this degrading and unmanly, yet almost humorous, state of' "funk" concerning Germany? The leading men of Germany, as no doubt, Mr. Editor, you are aware, are against war and overwhelmingly in favor of peace, though the average Devon Street man can nowise lie brought for a moment to admit this. If, then, the Germans prpfer peace, just as their English cousins, I hope, do, what is there to prevent a purely business arrangement being made between the two nations, providing that al! disputes which may arise be submitted to arbitration—to a court of arbitrators whose impartiality and integrity are, of course, unquestioned? There arc two chief obstacles to such a course — firstly, the military men, who naturally fight desperately against disarmament and the consequent abolition of their calling; and, secondly, irresponsible editors "of the press, whom War Chancellor Hollweg recently denounced as the chief instigators of war. Now, if it be true, and I aver that it is true, that nine out of ten ordinary men (of all nations) really do not want war, preferring as they do to continue their ordinary business avocations rather than neglect such to indulge in the costly, inconvenient and foolish game called war, why in the name of Justice and Democracy should such nine men be dictated to b> v the' tenth man who (possibly for motives of interest) desires war? Fortunatelv, the end of this astonishing example of mhrt? ority rule seems' to be coining into sight, though some years, no doubt, will be required before its establishment, is complete. The education of the people to the true state of affairs seems to be the thing most needed. Evolutionists tell us that evolution is the evolving of order out of disorder. The progress of nations is subject to the same great law. As time goes on, and international affairs become conducted on lines of business, reason and control, rather than of emotion, prejudice and uneontrol, there can be but one result—war will have to go. Tt is for every man who is a man, and especially for every man who attaches any importance to a name which is now more or less forgotten or despised (T mean, of course, the name of Christ) to do what little he can towards bringing in the great oncoming era —the greatest era the world will ever see —the era of international peace.—T am. &c.. PICACK AND ri;(>r:HKSS. Xew Plymouth, May 20, 1!)I1.
