ENTERTAINMENTS
'•WHY MEN LOVE WOMEN." "Why Men Love Women," which Is to be presented to local theatre-goers at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday next, May 24, under. the auspices of Mr. Allan Hamilton by arrangement with Messrs. Clark and Meynell, caused quite a sensation in Melbourne. The second week's returns eclipsed those of the opening week, and a repetition of the Australian success is now obtaining throughout the Dominion. Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and one or two of the larger provincial towns have rendered their patronage and meed of praise. Some of the scribes attribute its success in a measure to its peculiar title, "Why Men Love Women"; others to the fact that two of the leading actresses frivol in first act in "harem" skirts, hut the management ascribe its success to its general excellence in staging and acting. Mr. Hamilton himself says that "Why Men Love Women" is certainly melodrama, hut he asserts that it is infinitely better than nine-tenths of the melodramas staged during his experience. Jhe company, which will appear for tv/6 nights only, is headed by two cultured and accomplished dramatic stars, (i fo wit, Frances Ross and Mr. Conway Wingfield, and they are supported by a most capable company of twenty-eight artists. On Thursday a dramatisation of Mrs. Henry Woods' immortal work, "East Lynne," will be presented, when Miss Frances Rose will be seen in her remarkable creation of the dual roles of Lady Isalel Vane and Madame Vine.
