CLASS-CONSCIOUS JOHNSON
Xew York, May C. Some of the newspapers here are accusing Jack Johnson of class consciousness. Tin- eliainpion pugilist, lias decided to sell his motor-cars —he possesses several —and he will devote the proceeds to the purchase of a diamond tiara for his wife. Johnson went to a big reception the other day, when several notable English people were present. The wife of an earl was among the quests, and Johnson came to the conclusion there, and expressed himself accordingly to a newspaper man, that be thought bis wife would look as well in a tiara as any titled lady. The result is that be has -riven an order to a lending firm of cilv jewellers for a ,->f).O0Odol. ( .til 0,000) diamond tiara which is to grace the brow of Mrs. Johnson. Johnson has also expressed the determination that he intends to get right into society. He says that his wife is just as <jond a little woman as the next, and it is up to him to put her among the "glad ones." Xew York society is much agitated, and the "best" people recall the purchase by Johnson of a mansion in the aristocratic quarter, an event that was followed by a general protest from the "Four Hundred." The negro has expressed himself ns "full-up" with automobility, and gives that as one. of the reasons for relinquishing his cars. Tie is going to aeroplane. A strenuous protest is likely to he made by the leaders of society in New York against the admittance of the world's champion to the select circle. Johnson is caricatured as n "bi<* bit"," sharing in the delights of Pnlm°Bencn. Florida, and it is even rumored that he will stand for Congress.
