EGMONT WINTER MEETING, I The Egmont Racing Club had excellent ' weather yesterday for the opening day [ of the winter meeting, and ;.the attendance was good. Betting was fairly brisk, £8531 being put through the totalisator, as compared with £4985 on the first day of the previous winter meeting, when the bookmakers were present and laying odds. The course and appointments were all in excellent order, and the arrangements for the meeting were a credit to the club's management, credit being very largely due, of course, to Mr. J. A. 'furton, the secretary. The Manaia Brass Band played on the lawn throughout the afternoon. The fields were large and the racing interesting. Although most of the finishes were by comfortable margins, there was always a hard struggle for one of the placed horses. The "big race" was the Manaia Handicap, and it was won by Starboard's late run in the straight, and there was a handsome return to his followers. The public were not too successful in "picking" the winners; and the returns to successful bettors were fairly substantial. There was only one "incident." The stewards were dissatisfied with R. Barlow's riding of Master Sylvia in the Railway Handicap, and after a lengthy enquiry disqualified him for twelve months on the charge that he "pulled'' his mount. The decision of the committee was not shared by many' of the keen followers of racing on the, stand. In the opinion of .the handicapper, Mr. G. Morse, who, of course, was watching the race very closely, Master Sylvia was "done" at the turn for home, and at the moment he made a remark to that effect, adding that six furlongs was a bit far for him. It was stated that Master Sylvia was solidly supported by his connections (including the rider), and a very general surprise was expressed at the disqualification. 'lne following were the results:— TONGAHOE HANDICAP HURDLES, of SO bovs., one mile and a-half. Mr. A. E. Tucker's b g Euroco (Euroclydon—Bowsprit), Cyrs, 9.0 (N. Williams) 1 Mr. H.
