A complaint is again voiced regarding the tricky ways of the itinerant hawker. Blenheim seems to be a happy huntingground for these cross-grained gentry. Their modus operandi is to wait till the muscular masculines are all away at work, and then they go to the door of a residence and knock. The feeble feminines are busy and say: "Nothing to-day, thank you," but the hawker does not take this as final. He insists upon showing his goods, and at the same time becomes truculent over every refusal to buy, until in many cases the housewife becomes really frightened and buys a thing she does not want. Last year one of these gentry was caught in the act of intimidating a housewife, and received a severe thrashing, and it is a pity a few more sucli salutary lessons could not be administered.—Blenheim Express.
