AUCKLAND'S EXHIBITION.
GOVERNMENT'S HELP REQUIRED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The first important stage towards holding a big international exhibition in Auckland was taken this afternoon, when the Chamber of Commerce practically committed iself to the undertaking and authorised a public meeting to be called to discuss the necessary steps. The Chamber received a report of the committee appointed to confer on the matter, which stated that the committee had unanimously resolved—"That a first-class international cxhimtion be held in Auckland within the next tiro years." ihc chairman (Mr. Leo Myers), in moving the. adoption of the report, reminded members that it was thirteen years since the last exhibition was held. For some time past considerable discussion had taken place in business circles in regard to this matter, and the propositi seemed to have met with general approval, not only in Auckland, but elsewhere. One Wellington paper, however, seemed to think that, it was the intention of the provisional committee to ask the Government for financial assistance similar to that given to the Christehurch Exlr tion, for which the Government was mulcted to the extent of £50,000 or ffiO.OOO. He (the president) wished to say that the Auckland Chamber of Commerce did not suggest that the Government should subsidise the exhibition in this way. and that the Chamber would be satisfied with a smnch smaller amount than that. The exhibition would give an excellent opportunity for aiding and generally assisting in demonstrating the progress oi the Dominion. There was ft general expression of opinion at the time the financial aspect of the Christchurch Exhibition was beins considered that an exhibition supported by Government subsidies should be held at reasonable intervals in each of the large cities of the Dominion, so he thought the Chamber of Commerce might go to the Government with every reasonable expectation that their request would be granted. (Hear, hear).
'Mr. f.'nnsnn seconded the inotion, which was carried without dissent.
