Mr. G. Tisch, Mayor of New Plymouth, intends taking a trip to England and Ireland in about eighteen months' tine.
An Adelaide cablegram states that Mr Grattan Congblan, the comedian, was found dead in his bed. He had performed at the theatre the previous night. The death is announced at the age of 7(1 of Mr. William Bell, who, over thirty years ago, became a settler in the Halcome end of the Manchester Block.
A Sydney cablegram states that Mr. MacDonnell, State Chief Secretary, is dangerously ill in a private hospital in Melbourne, suffering from an internal disease.
The death occurred in Wellington on Sunday of Mr. Richard Robinson, aged 50 years. Mr. Robinson was a wellknown colonist, having been 30 years in the New Zealand railways. Mr. w. J, Gcddis, of Napier, and Mr. W : RloniHeld, of Auckland, now touring Europe, were, through the influence o( friends in Rome, on March 23, received in audience by His Holiness the Pope. At the first statutory meeting of the newly-elected Gisborne Harbor Board yesterday Mr. John Townsley was reelected chairman of 'the board, which now consists of fifteen members.—Press Association.
A London cablegram states that Mr. H. B. Irving and Miss Dorothea Baird had nn enthusiastic reception at Hii ■ Majesty's Theatre in a farewell performance of Hamlet prior to their leav- ' ing for Australasia. Dr. Pomare publishes a denial of a statement telegraphed from Te Kuiti ■ that he is standing for Parliament to ', defeat the dominance of Malmta. He states that he consented to stand owing : to the repeated request, of the tribes of the Western district for redress of their grievances.
