A SPORTSMAN INJURED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Taihape, Monday. While lifting his gun through a wire fence yesterday, William l'aradine, a roadman, residing near Pungataua, had his right forearm shattered. Ho is progressing satisfactorily, but even if the arm is saved, there is little hope that the hand can be used again. KILLED ON THE RAILWAY. Timaru, Monday. John Kyle, aged 70 years, employed in the wool department of the Pareora killing works, met his death under most distressing circumstances on .Saturday evening, being literally cut to pieces at the Timaru railway station by the second north-going express. As the express was steaming out Kyle was noticed to attempt to alight from the top platform of a second-class carriage. He missed his footing, and was seen holding on to the platform railing and being dragged along the platform. He then slipped down between the train and the platform, still gripping the railing, and •four cars passed over his body. The train was stopped, and the pieces oi the mangled body were gathered and taken to the morgue. At the inquest held this morning a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone.

A FATAL MISTAKE. Wellington, Last Night. Mrs. Maginnity, of Karori, who died on Sunday through taking a nicotine preparation for spraying rose bushes in mistake for medicine, was the widow of the late John Maginnity, for many years in business in Wellington as a wine and spirit merchant. The deceased took a prominent part in the work of the Catholic parish of Thorndon, and was greatly esteemed and respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

An enquiry into the cause of death was commenced this afternoon by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., Coroner.

Ida Maginnity, youngest daughter of the deceased, gave evidence that she did not think her mother knew that the nicotine was poison. About 11.30, w#ipn witness was in bed. she heard her mother call out. Witness rushed to her, and her mother said, "Oh, Ida, I've taken the wrong mixture, and it has done for me. I can feel it.'' Witness gave'her some brandy, but she was dead when Dr. Herbert arrived a few minutes later. Mrs. Clabburn, a neighbor, also gave evidence. The enquiry was then adjourned till to-morrow, when Dr. Herbert's evidence will be taken. ACCIDENT AT OPUA ROAD. Mr. Alex Wilcock, of the Opua road, met with a painful accident on Saturday, by which it is feared he will lose the sight of an eye. He was driving a staple, when it flew out, and the point penetrated his eye. His brother Charles brought him into Opunake, where he was attended by Dr. Barron, who ordered him to the New Plymouth Hospital, whither lie proceeded by car during the afternoon.—Opunake correspondent.
