TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Corazon is one of the leniently treated ones in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Irish Rifle is a long while winning a race, but the big fellow should shape better under welter weights in the winter. The Racing Commission is sitting at Wellington from the oth to 10th inst.', and the slaughter of the innocents is going along steadily. At first glance Ribstone Pippin reads well in the Century Hurdles with Ost 21bs, and The Native and Xavier have nothing to complain of either. Boanerges was to have been railed to Hastings on Saturday, but on Friday morning he ricked himself while galloping at Awapuni, and it is doubtful whether he will be able to start at the Hawke's Bay meeting on Wednesday. Talk about jumpers! In the recent Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase the winner, Glenside, was the only horse to get around without a fall. There were twenty-six starters. For winning at Trentham, Silver Bullet appears to have got plenty of weight in Egmont engagements. The horse is a cut above the average hack, no doubt, but it shows how quickly a hack can jump to the head of a handicap on the strength of one or two medium performances.
Down south Dorando is steadily making friends by his fine displays over the schooling fences. The brown son of San Fran gave a taste of his quality at thu Canterbury meeting, and, being possessed of pace and a fine natural jumping ability, he may be seen to advantage across country before long. Glenfern, with H. Gray in the saddle, was sent out a warm favorite for the Maiden at Blenheim, and tried to make every post a winning one. A locallytrained one in Long Tom (Sensation— Wai West) got the leader at the home turn and, staying better than the Taranaki horse, won by over a length. It is just over twelve months since Poicticrs made his debut at Ellerslie and downed fifteen two-year-olds in the Onslow Stakes. The chestnut son of Obligado then went wrong, and since then has drifted right back in public estimation. On Wednesday Poictiers was saddled up for the Dominion Handicap at Avondale, and was the outsider of six in a very poor field, but landed the stake .after an interesting race with Lady Betty. Sports who we're booming the winner last year would receive a shock when they saw the price he paid. Despite the steadier of 9st 10 lbs, it was certain that Equitas only had to go to tlio post to be backed into tiro position of first-favorite for the Marlborough Cup. Gunboat was next in demand, and Blenheim money poured in for Beacon. Equitas and Directoire were in front for half-a-mile, and then Beacon took up the running and cracked on the pace. Alec. Hall's cast-off was out on his own along the back, and sailed into the straight with a three lengths lead. Gray brought Gunboat up with a brilliant run from the distance, and catching the tiring leader twenty yards from home, won by half-a-length, Directoire was a length away third, and Equitas, Kilosteri and Merrie Zealand finished right on her quarter. Hilarian got tangled up with the tapes at the start, and took no part in the race. Glenspring (Glenogle—Spring Rose) is always a hard horse to beat at Blenheim, though not of much account elsewhere, Tumut and Zealand, the latter having the services of Gray, carried most money in the Flying, but their chances went up with the barrier. Glenspring whipped out like a flash and was never caught. |
In the Telegraph Handicap Red Lupin had heaps of Taranaki friends, but Glenspring again upset the good thing. Which reminds me, last year Mon Ami and Toanga were solidly' supported for the latter event, hut Glenspring sprung a surprise on the favorites.
