MOKAU-MOHAKATINO BLOCK

TO BE CUT UP FOR SETTLEMENT At yesterday's meeting of the Clifton County Council a letter was received from Messrs, J. M. Johnston and Co., of Palmcrston North, on benalf of the Mokau Coal and Estate Co., Ltd., authorising ill'. L. C. Sladden to interview the Council regarding necessary roading in connection with the Mohakatino Block. Mr. L, C. Sladden, surveyor, accordingly waited on the Council during the afternoon, and explained that the company was about to cut up and sell tln> land. He therefore wanted to know the , requirements of the Council re roading. He pointed out that before any transfers could lie registered it would be necessary for the company to show that they had complied with the County Council's requirements as to formation of roads. The would be bound by the Public Vvorks Act to lay off the road reserves a chain wide, and they proposed to form the road about 12 feet wide, and would grade it so tlwt there should be a minimum grade of 1 in 15. It remained with the Council, however, to state what width of formation would be required, and the steepest grade they would allow; also that the formation of the road should be approved bv the Council's engineer. The Council could not demand metalliiig. In asking the Council's favorable consideration, he remarked that the lanu, which had not produced any revenue to the Council in the past, was now paying rates. It was proposed to cut up the block into sections varying in area up to about 1000 acres, and 22 miles of roading would be necessary. He submitted a plan of the proposed roads. The Council discussed the matter, and, on the motion of Cr. McKenzie, seconded by Cr. Julian, it was resolved to agree to Messrs Sladden and Palmer's application to lay out and form roads within the boundaries of the Mokau-Mohaka-tino Block, subject to the conditions of the Public Works Act, as applied to width of road reserve and grades, that is, a minimum of one in fifteen, whilst the location and also the work of actual formation would be subject to the approval of the county engineer on behalf of the Council, and that the width of the main road from Mokau to Waitaanga road be 15 feet, and of by-roads 12 feet.
