CYCLING
TARANAKI BRITANNIA ROAD RACE, j There was a good attendance at the meeting convened last night for the purpose of making arrangements for the proposed cycle road race round the mountain, which has already been mentioned in these columns. ' Mr. J. McLeod occupied the chair, and explained the objects of the meeting. He also announced that several leading cycle firms had promised to give handsome donations, as previously published, and that other firms had also promised their support. There was no doubt whatever that the race would receive great support at the hands of the cycle people. The proposed route was an ideal one, as the race would begin and finish in the same town. It was intended to give prizes amounting to between £3OO and £4OO, and the race would attract i cyclists from all over New Zealand and Australia. These cyclists would have to remain in the district for a few days, so as to familiarise themselves with the route. It was resolved that a committee be termed to promote a cycle road race round the mountain, to "be termed the "Britannia Cycle Road Race." The following committee was appointed with power to add to its number: Messrs. A. George, G. W. Gunson, Williams, J. Elliott, J. C. Morey, sen., E. Cattley, E. J. Davy, J. Garcia, J. Clark, A. L. Humphries, E. Whittle, J. McKcan and G. Griffiths. Officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr. G. Tisch; president, Mr. W. Williams; vice-president, Mr. J. C. Morey, sen.; secretary pro tern, Mr. J. McLeod; treasurer, Mr. E. Whittle; executive committee, Messrs. J. Clark, A. George, J. McLeod and the president, vice-president, and treasurer ex officio; canvassing committee, Messrs. W. Williams, J. C. Morey, A. George, E. Whittle and G. W. Gunson. This committee will get to work immediately. It will cost a considerable sum to finance the undertaking, which, if successful, will be an annual fixture, and it is confidently expected that the scheme will be liberally supported. It was decided to hold the race on August 17th, just sixteen days before the Timnru-Chrislchurch race," so that visitors from the Commonwealth can compete at both. It is proposed that the race shall finish in the Recreation Grounds, where a football match will probably be in progress, and the positions of the leading competitors will be anuounced from time to time by means of a megaphone. An entertainment will also be arranged in the Theatre Royal in the evening. The committee will meet next Fridav night. '
